I worked with Teign Valley Glass Foundry to create sandcast elements that I wanted to set into a dalle de verre plaque. The first design was based on a drawing by Escher , I thought it would be interesting to turn that into a three dimensional work in glass. There are over thirty individual cast pieces in the design.
After I made the glass pieces Sophie Drouin, a wonderful Canadian mosaic artist and musician, showed me in June at the Chicago Mosaic School how she had developed a technique of creating substrates for dalle de verre compositions.
I incorporated some architectural salvage glass that I found in Chicago into a design alongwith three sandcast birds that I also made at Teign Valley Glass Foundry. These blend with the cut dalle de verre elements to create a chagallian impression.
Here’s the casting of the piece drying off.
